Winter Lip Wardrobe Part 1: Classic Red

Winter Lip Wardrobe Part 1: Classic Red

Up until this year, I have always been faithful to the neutral lip. But then... the weather started to get colder. And all I wanted to wear was a statement lip. I've gotten so much more adventurous with bold lip colors this season. I've even dabbled into vampy colors like Nars Train Bleu. I'm not quite brave enough to go full-on black lipstick yet, but I'm pretty surprised (and proud) of how much I've stepped out my lip color comfort zone.

That being said, I thought I would give you a little look into my favorite lip shades of the season. Let's call it: My winter lip wardrobe. I've divided it into 3 color categories: Classic Reds, Dark & Vampy, and 90s & Nudes. I'll dedicate a post to each category, and include a few of my favorite options (both drugstore and high-end).

Today, I thought I would share my top 4 product picks for a classic red lip. A red lip is one of the most iconic and timeless looks of all time. It's one of the few looks that can be both glamorous and casual. Best of all, it is suitable for any season. But there's something about the holidays that just makes me want to throw on a cozy sweater and slap on a festive red lip (just because!).

Here are my picks:
1. Dose of Colors (Shade: Merlot): I will be the first to say that I am not 100% on the liquid lipstick bandwagon. I find them a little uncomfortable, drying, and fussy. But Dose of Colors does them very well. Merlot is a gorgeous deep (blue-tone) red. It is incredibly rich in pigment - you only need a couple swipes. It dries down to a perfect (and almost transfer-proof) matte finish, making it extremely long-lasting. I do find it a little less drying than other liquid lipstick formulas, which is a big plus. If you're going to a holiday party of event, and don't want to worry about touching up very much, this is for you. I'd recommend lining your lips with a fine brush before going in with the actual applicator.

2. Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Creme Lipstick (Shade: 206 Dashing): This lipstick is everything to me. It is my no-fail, no-fuss, holy grail lipstick. If I'm ever uncertain about my lipstick choice, I know I can turn to ole faithful. Every time I wear this color, I get tons of compliments. Because it really is the perfect red. These lipsticks are so unbelievably creamy, pigmented, and long-wearing. They don't feather or bleed. And most importantly, they are so comfortable. Yes, they are expensive. But of all the makeup items I have ever bought, I can easily say that this one was worth every single penny. And I will definitely be repurchasing this lipstick when I run out! There are tons of different red tones available in the Le Marc range, so there's definitely a color out there for everyone.

3. Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip (Shade: Creeper): I first saw a shade of the Colourpop ultra matte lipsticks on Teni Panosian's instagram, and I immediately wanted to know more. She's wearing the shade "Succulent" in that post, which is a very vibrant (almost neon) orange/red. The shade I'm featuring today is called "Creeper". It's a little more laid back than 'Succulent', but it's still a beautiful orange-y red. The Colourpop Ultra Matte Lipsticks are a little more drying than the Dose of Colors liquid lipsticks. However, at $6 a piece, I really can't complain. I wouldn't recommend this range if you need something extremely long-wearing. But the colors themselves are vibrant and beautiful. And there are tons of shades to choose from as well.

4. Rimmel London Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss (Shade: 107): This lipstick is an all-time favorite of UK beauty blogger, Zoella, which is how I stumbled onto this lipstick in the first place.  It's a very deep red (oxblood without getting too vampy) that wears beautifully. I think that this lipstick is very comparable to the Marc Jacobs lipstick I mentioned earlier. It may not be as long-wearing, but the color payoff is pretty stunning. The craziest part : I believe you can purchase this in the US for $4-6 at various drugstores and beauty supplies. Hooray for great drugstore options!

I hope you enjoyed Part 1 of my Winter Lip Wardrobe. Parts 2 & 3 will be coming very soon.

What are some of your favorite go-to red lipsticks?  Leave me a comment - I'd love to know!
